Upon a proposal by Laurent De Meyer and Gatien Du Bois, Hotel BLOOM! is glad to introduce you the next exhibition in the Penthouse Art Residency: “Plus loin les yeux”. For this occasion, Céline Cuvelier invites you to discover her wonderful art works.
Penthouse Art Residency hosts PLUS LOIN LES YEUX
Every week for three years, Céline Cuvelier went to Berkendael, the women’s prison located in Forest, Brussels. She organizes a painting workshop there. As she encounters the inmates, the intimate accounts of their daily life, the confiscated personal objects, the colors and shapes of the spaces they cross, were transposed into traces that attempt to echo this experience which stands on the edge of a brutal but fruitful tension of life.
In resonance with the Journées Nationales de la Prison that are held each year in November, the exhibition Plus loin les yeux is conceived as an invitation to move our gaze beyond the walls of our biases and to question our society on its margins.
About Céline Cuvelier
Céline Cuvelier (°1988, Brussels, BE) is a Belgian artist. She is a multi-faceted artist, whose work touches on painting, sculpture, installation and photography. Through her artistic research, she was naturally drawn to working with inmates in prisons, and refugees in migrant camps grappling with the realities of those who experience the limits of our societies.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, and began studying art in 2011, enrolling in the painting section of the Académie Royale des Beaux Arts in Brussels, where she finished her studies in 2016.
After graduating, she obtained a residency at the Moonens Foundation. Since then, Céline Cuvelier has participated in a number of collective exhibitions in Belgium such as la Radieuse, curated by Emmanuel Lambion and Frédéric de Goldschmidt (2016); Masters Salon 2016 at the Vanderborght Buildings and at the Royal Academy of Antwerp; The Bloom Experiment at the Hotel BLOOM!; The Other Stoic Comedian at ÉTÉ 78 and Island Presents at La Vallée.
